Planting Perennial & Annual Plants

Stage your plants around your planting area while still in their pots. Make sure you have taken into consideration the mature height/width of the plants as well as the sun or shade requirements. Determine an appropriate location for planting, then dig a hole a few inches wider than the container.

Water your plants thoroughly, then remove them from their pots by inverting them and supporting the root ball. If the roots are compacted, you may need to make a few shallow cuts through the roots on the side and bottom of the root ball. Place your plant in the hole. Add the Bumper Crop Soil Builder to ground level. Water the plant thoroughly to ensure the soil fills in completely around the roots, eliminating air pockets.

Apply Bumper Crop Starter Food at this time. Monitor your plants daily. Water slowly to attain deep water penetration which encourages widespread root development Add a 2 to 3 inch mulch layer around the plant. This will prevent water loss and keep mowers and trimmers from getting too close to the plant. Avoid overly deep mulch against the stem or trunk of the plant, as this can promote disease or pest injury.

Planting Trees & Shrubs

Call 811 Before You Dig

811 is the number to call (or visit 811now.com) before digging to protect yourself and others from unintentionally hitting underground utility lines. You will be given a CONFIRMATION NUMBER. If Rhoads is planting your trees/ shrubs, we will process this for you and will then schedule your planting.

Before You Plant

Always plant in a well drained soil. To test for soil drainage, dig a hole for your new plant and fill it with water. If the water doesn’t drain in 12 hours, the soil in that area will need to be amended dramatically to help with drainage.

What Plant Form are You Planting?

Your tree or shrub will come in two forms: Balled and burlapped (B&B); or containerized. Containerized or B&B plants can be planted any time the ground is 􀄨1.ot frozen. l£ possible plant your tree or shrub as soon as you get it home. Otherwise, it may dry out and become injured. If you can’t plant it immediately, place it in a shady or sheltered location. Keep the soil moist until planted.

Placing Your Plant in the Hole

Remove all tags and ropes from the stems or trunk and follow these guidelines. Dig a hole twice the width of your container or root ball and the same depth.

Enriching Your Soil & Backfilling

Create a mixture of enriched soil by combining 2/3rds of the soil removed from the hole with a 1/3rd of the Bumper Crop Organic Soil Builder. Begin to backfill the hole with your mixed soil. For every 2 to 3 inches of soil you backfill, pack it down by using water in conjunction with a spade to prevent air pockets. Use as per directions Bumper Crop Starter Food as you backfill. Use some excess soil to build a ring on the outer edges of the hole to prevent water runoff.

Balled & Burlapped Plants
Keep the wire basket intact and DO NOT remove. Once the enriched soil has been placed 3/4 of the way up the root ball, cut and fold down the top 1/4 of the basket and burlap, remove any strings around the tree trunk. Fill the remaining hole with enriched soil to its original level.

Container Plants
Ease the pot off without disturbing the root ball. If the roots are extremely compacted, you may need to make a few shallow cuts on the side and bottom of the root ball to loosen densely compacted roots. You will not hurt the roots.

Watering

Water your newly planted tree or shrub by using a slow, deep watering method. B&B and container plant roots dry out faster than the soil around them, so it is important to monitor soil moisture. Water slowly to attain deep water penetration which encourages wide spread root development. Watering requirements will vary from daily watering to once a week dependent on plant type and weather conditions. Using a moisture meter will help guide you in determining your specific watering needs for your newly planted tree or shrub.

General Watering Guidelines for Clay Soil:
1 gal. Pot:
Trickle water for approx. 3-4 minutes
2 gal. Pot: Trickle water for approx. 4-5 minutes
3 gal. Pot: Trickle water for approx. 5-6 minutes
4 gal. – 7 gal.: Trickle water for approx. 7-10 minutes
B&B: Trickle water for 15 minutes

Remember, if it rains for 1 hr, it probably was not enough water for a newly planted shrub or tree.

Mulching

Add a 2″-3″ layer of shredded mulch around the plant. This will help prevent water loss and keep mowers and trimmers from getting too close to the plant. Avoid overly deep mulch against the trunk or stem of the plant as this can promote disease or pest injury.
